Where to pop the BIG question?

El Questro HeliSpirit

This is a story about a romantic man organising his marriage proposal.

I have worked with Angus for some years now – over the phone and emails – as you do when you are at opposite ends of Australia. Angus is the Product Manager at APT’s Kimberley Wilderness Adventures. HeliSpirit provides Mitchell Falls helicopter flights and Bungle Bungle helicopter flights as well as private charters for APT guests. Anyway, to get to the point of this story, Angus and I finally met in the Kimberley in May. Angus usually lives in Melbourne and had taken some annual leave to holiday with his partner Mel, in the Kimberley.

At the time we met, HeliSpirit was doing a massive photoshoot across all our locations and I proudly showed Angus a beautiful image that our wonderful photographer, Ben from BJK Photography, had sent me. This is the one – above.   I jokingly said to Angus, you are travelling with your partner aren’t you? This is the perfect proposal location – why don’t you pop the question here, you can be the first ever to propose at this spot. He smiled and laughingly brushed off my comment and we went our different ways.

A couple of days later Angus called me and said, “Sonja, you have no idea what was going through my head when you made that proposal comment. I have planned to propose to Mel at El Questro, I have it all worked out, but now I really want to do it at the spot in that photo you showed me. How can we do it?”

How funny is that!
Together with Sam, our El Questro pilot and Lori, the General Manager at El Questro, we planned Angus’ romantic helicopter flight to this amazingly beautiful location on the Cockburn Range. Mel was blissfully unaware and thought they were going on a scenic flight and was thrilled about that. Then they landed and stepped out to enjoy the incredible  view over a bottle of champagne and a gourmet picnic.

The Cockburn Range is a Kimberley landmark. It is often seen in shots of the Pentecost River crossing, made famous in the movie AUSTRALIA. Early this year, HeliSpirit marked out a helicopter landing area on top of the Cockburn Range, with the aim of developing a flight tour to land and take in the magnificent views.

Getting back to Angus and Mel; Sam, our pilot, went for a walk to leave them in private and the rest is history.
Mel said YES and Angus was over the moon with happiness. He still is. It’s such  a great story. I think back to Angus’ reaction when I joked about the proposal idea on top of the Cockburn Range and he was very contained, he didn’t give a thing away.

We have developed this into a helicopter flight tour from El Questro. It’s well worth doing if you are visiting El Questro, even if you don’t have a marriage proposal in mind. To experience this view, with no one else there, is extraordinary. Click here to find out more about our  HeliSpirit El Questro helicopter flights.
