Pilot Insight into the Katherine Gorge Tours

Hi, my name is Tom and I am originally from Sydney, New South Wales.

Why did you become a helicopter pilot?

I have always wanted to become a pilot, probably since I was about 10 or so. I think I’ve wanted to do it mainly because I have just had a fascination with helicopters for such a long time and it was a goal of mine to become a pilot. The more I fly, the more I love it and appreciate it. It’s a pretty good job, not many people even get to experience a helicopter flight, so I am lucky that I get to do it nearly every day.

What is the thing you enjoy most about being a helicopter pilot?

The thing I enjoy the most is being able to do what I love. I hardly think of flying helicopters as work. I think the thrill of flying and manoeuvrability of a helicopter is a pretty cool thing, there aren’t many other aircraft that can do what a helicopter can.

What are the best aspects/ most spectacular parts of flying around the NT?

All of it! Haha. One aspect would be tough to choose, though doing the Katherine Gorge helicopter flights were a stand out to me. It is just such an amazing part of Australia and personally, I think it is underrated. I think when people visit they are wowed at what we have in our own backyard.

What is your favourite tour/ place to fly in the NT?

Like I said, the Katherine Gorge Day Tour is a pretty spectacular flight. But flying around Mitchell Falls and Mitchell Plateau is also very impressive. I don’t know if I have one specific favourite, there are just so many awesome places up here.

What is the most common question you get from passengers?

The most common question I get would probably be how long have you been flying for or where am I from. Though a lot ask about the places we fly over, so I had to study up on a lot of places in the Kimberley and NT so I can answer their questions.

What do you do during the offseason/ wet season?

When I’m not flying around the North of Aus, I head back home to Sydney. There I continue to fly helicopters, I do some scenic flights there and other helicopter services. It’s a good change going from Northern Australia back to Sydney and vice-versa.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

I’m a big Sydney Swans fan, so I enjoy kicking back and watching footy and just hanging out with friends. The simple things in life!
